"Ghost With Two Hearts" by Michael R. French is an amazing short read revolving around the concepts of self-discovery, forgiveness, moral conflict, adventure, and love beyond boundaries. The story revolves around 30-year-old Adrian Green, a successful tech software engineer, who is tired of his work and life. He decides to return a katana his grandfather acquired in WWII from a Japanese general to its rightful owner. On his journey to return the sword and seek forgiveness on his grandfather's behalf, he learns about the vast difference between the Western and Japanese philosophies revolving around life, death, and honour.

After coming to Japan, Adrian decides to live and learn about a new culture and place while trying to complete his mission. He rents a house where he meets an unexpected friend, a Kami (a Shinto spirit) named Emiko, who is stuck in the cycle of punishment for committing suicide. Soon, the two start developing feelings for each other that go beyond the realm of living and death. Adrian's mission changes from returning the sword to seeking peace, acceptance, and forgiveness for Emiko from Inari, even on the account of his own life.

I loved how the author wrote the back-and-forth communication between Adrian and Emiko. The romance between them was fantastic, even though it was heartbreaking. I also loved how the author made the Waterstone game a means of communication between Adrian and Emiko; it was a very interesting take.

I would give this book 5 out of 5 stars. The book is beautifully written and well-edited. The author has brilliantly intertwined the genres of self-discovery, adventure, romance, and the supernatural. The research and attention the author has given to the intricacies and insights of Japanese belief, culture, and religion are impeccable. The points of view and backgrounds of the two main leads are also beautifully written, making the book extremely engaging, intriguing, and entertaining. The author has also taken much pain to define the scenes and culture of Japan beautifully. However, I felt that the dialogues were a bit lacking in a sense of feeling at times. Still, the book was a fabulous read, giving me no reason to deduct a point despite the above opinion.

"Ghost With Two Hearts" by Michael R. French was an amazing read that I would suggest to every fiction lover, especially if they are into supernaturals. The book provides a detailed description of Japanese beliefs and culture, so Japanese enthusiasts might also enjoy this book. However, the mention of suicide might be an issue for people who are triggered by it, so they might take it on knowing this.
