Border Post 99 by Kedar Patankar is a fictional tale about an area in the no man’s land between Pakistan and India. The story revolves around the two soldiers stationed at the border. These soldiers both know that the post should be deserted, and to engage in any conflict would result in heavy punishment.

Both of the main characters, Lieutenant Sharma and General Khan, have a lot of the same characteristics. They are both indoctrinated to believe that the other is bad, lazy and cruel. The first time the two men saw each other across the river that divides their two camps, they came back ready to shoot. Neither of them did. They realized that they both had the same orders. They are ordered not engage each other in combat. This leads to a series of violent pranks being played by both parties. These pranks fuel the burning fire in both men, and just makes their hated for each other more with each passing day.

This book was amazing to read. The characters felt real, and it is easy to relate to them. The shared hatred of both Lieutenant Sharma and General Khan is so basic and feral that it feels like nothing could come in between it. They then continue and try their very best to make the other fire the first shot, potentially starting a war.

The story handles the prejudices of the two main characters wonderfully. It makes you hope that both of them succeed, even if it means failure of the other. On the surface it seems like both characters could have been basically the same person, as they have no real traits attributed to them apart from the hate and disdain that they feel for each other. This is not a flaw, as this is how they see each other and the only thing they have to react to. The realization that they are both fighting for something they believe in makes it hard to fault either for trying so hard to win.

I loved the book and I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book had no noticeable flaws and deserves 4 stars. Giving this book 3 stars would not do it justice as everything felt just right. The book was amazing to read and had me hooked from start to end. It was a short story that took you on a wild ride of emotions. I would highly recommend reading it.
