Border Post 99 by Kedar Patankar is a historical fiction novel. The book was published by Global Mind Publishing. The story is set on the India-Pakistan border. The book is a short story that is expertly written to follow two protagonists headed for conflict and the many ways they may be similar. The author starts the book of by following Lieutenant Sharma.
Lieutenant Mangesh Sharma has just been given a new assignment. He has just travelled from the Indian army's Western Command headquarters to the India-Pakistan border. He gets to his new post in one piece, but he soon becomes constantly nervous that the Pakistani solders might be lacking in the shadows. He has been appointed sentry at one of the odd spots on the border. Although it was protected all around by army divisions, the tiny patch at Post 99 was left alone because it was in no man’s land. Post 99 does not exist on any official maps, but both countries on either side of the border are highly tense concerning the land. On the fourth day of his posting, he meets Pakistani Captain Abid Khan. He has received similar orders, to not engage no matter what happens. The tension between the two countries is played out in the similarities and differences in the two soldiers. With a peace agreement being worked on, will the tension at Post 99 ebb or will they result in conflict? Will the two soldiers talk and find common ground? Will the peace agreement succeed or fall through? All these questions will be answered in this amazing book.
The main theme I encountered in this story was tension. Sharma is very nervous when he gets to his new assignment and he remains in this state for the next two days. On the fourth day, the tension goes on overdrive when he meets Abid Khan. The two countries are at a face-off for a peace deal and the military leaders in both countries want to spy on each other magnifying the tense situation. The other themes I encountered in this book were; respect, loyalty, conflict and determination. The author uses these themes masterfully to not only make the characters interesting, but to also make the plot memorable.
The character development in this book was written masterfully. The author makes sure to highlight the attributes of the two characters. We get to see that the two soldiers happen to decent human beings who just happen to be on opposite sides of a certain conflict. The two protagonists in this book drive the story completely. I found myself looking forward to their interaction as soon as they met. The excellent plot and the amazing characters made me compare this book to Escape by Belle Ami.
I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. This is because the author enveloped an amazing story with excellent characters. I found myself finishing the book in one day. I loved how the author kept building up the tension. There were no spelling mistakes and this maintained my focus on the book. The book was professionally edited.
I would recommend this book to all historical fiction fans. The author created an excellent book, but I did not like how short the book was. I would have preferred a longer plot on this interesting story. That said, I loved Ed this book and look forward to reading more of the author's works.
