Sometimes war between nations is ignited by the ordinary people because of miscommunication, negligence or emotions. Love, hope, respect, and valor are the themes in this story. Borderlines between warring nations are packed with ammunition, great soldiers, and high-end technology for communications. The case of India and Pakistan is unique. Both countries adhered to an unspoken rule of no ammunition and no soldiers. The readers will focus their attention on the personal lives of Sharma and Khan.

This short fiction story revolves around the two characters who were assigned to the most important mission of their lives because they are guarding the borderlines of their countries. Lieutenant Mangesh Sharma, an Indian soldier, and Captain Abid Khan, a captain in the Pakistani army will try to outwit each other which kept their lives busy in the No Man’s Land.

Lieutenant Sharma is twenty-five years old. He is new in the Indian army and did not experience any battle yet. He considered his assignment as impractical but his commander promised him that he is the perfect person for the post. He is a native of Bhagatpur. Abid Khan on the other hand, had served in the army for the last nine years and had seen plenty of combats. He is married to Soha but never had much time to stay with her because of his job as a soldier. His idol was his grandfather because his grandfather faced and overcame tough times in his life. The readers will find the two characters relatable and lovable.

The author has a rich second-hand experience about the Second World War. His maternal and paternal grandfathers, an uncle, and some cousins all fought in the Indian Army. This made his narration perfect for the situation. His skillful narration and descriptions are easy to follow. The way he develops the characters are amazing because the reader can feel their emotions and can read their thoughts.

What I admire the most about this story is the absence of an antagonist. In most cases, the absence of an antagonist makes the story weak but this is not the case in this story. The two main characters who are both protagonists make the story heart-warming. I rate Border Post 99 – No Man’s Land by Kedar Patankar 4 out of 4 stars because I did not encounter any problem in this story. In fact, I finished it in less than an hour full of laughter and awe. I highly recommend this book to everybody. I am open to a sequel about the separate lives of Khan and Sharma because I want to know what will happen to their beloved families and I want to know if their paths will cross again.
