Owen Cloud takes a leap of faith when he moves to Cypress Lake, affectionately called Sip Lake by its residents, at the invitation of his childhood friend. Settling into a quaint one-room cottage and taking up a job as an orderly at the local hospital, Owen begins a new chapter in his life. "Sip Lake" by Joe Basara tells Owen’s journey, narrated in his own engaging voice. He crosses paths with a host of intriguing characters, strives to capture the attention of his dream girl, Tina Gardenia, and aspires to see his name in print as a published author. I like that he is always trying to improve despite the mistakes and troubles he faces on his journey; all that shows him as a different character is his honesty and humbleness.
"Sip Lake" thrives on its vibrant ensemble of characters—such as Rush Rivers, Minnie Many Eyes, Vera Peach, Berry Cooter, and Cindy Kelp—who add a lighthearted charm. Owen emerges as a genuinely crafted character. He excels at his job in the hospital, despite a few slip-ups, and his kindness, trustworthiness, and loyalty make him a cherished friend among his neighbors and patients. Owen’s self-image, marred by his “kinky red hair and a pug nose,” contrasts with how others see him, valuing his intellect and compassionate personality. One particularly delightful aspect of the story is Owen’s tendency to drift into thoughts about books or TV shows he loves, often leading him to break into song. His literary jokes, like asking if all roads lead to Rome, New York, showcase his quirky humor and make for amusing interactions when others miss the reference. The natural and relatable dialogue deepened my connection to Owen.
I will give this book 5 out of 5 stars as it is a very well-written and character-oriented book. I found nothing negative about this book and also there were no grammatical errors in this book. I recommend this book to those who want to have a fun read and also get motivation at times. This would be the perfect combo to read.
