A Walk in the Dark by Carol Craig is a splendid book that is somehow hard to attribute to a genre. In some ways, I could describe this book as a mystery, in other ways as a drama, or as an inspiring tale. No matter how we want to describe this book, it is undoubtedly an incredible read.

Tracy, an aspiring veterinary clinic owner, finds an incredible plot of land perfect for building her dream job facility. The problem is that not only does this land and building need major work—much more than she anticipated—but also some weird events start to happen at the site. After she acquired the land, Tracy finds out that the previous owner, Mabel, has disappeared and left no traces.

While all of this takes place, Tracy meets Ryan, a nearby veteran who trains rescued dogs and, just like Tracy, has a special connection with animals. As if this is not an incredibly mysterious plot by itself, Ryan faces his form of shadows as well as grieving a sweet dog he had to leave in Afghanistan, as if he had to leave his best friend behind.

Together, Ryan and Tracy overcome all of these obstacles. They have a veterinary clinic to build, a mysterious disappearance to solve, and an animal's passion and grief contributing to an even more dramatic plot.

This book has everything. As an animal lover myself, I could relate deeply to both Tracy and Ryan, which is always a bonus point while reading any book. Both characters face major shadows but are very likable and have a very mesmerizing literary chemistry that I enjoyed deeply. I also loved the contrast between Afghanistan and, on the other end, Wyoming, as they are completely different scenarios, but somehow the author managed to transition between the two realities perfectly.

On a heavy note, I found the story a bit confusing, as even though the scenarios were very well transported and the transition seemed seamless, the same does not apply to the emotions the book passes on to the readers. What I mean is that while I was connecting with the harsh reality of grief experiences by Ryan, I didn’t feel like I had the time to mourn with him or to understand my emotions as something completely different occurred right away. There is a mystery; there is sadness, grief, anger, and everything else we could imagine in one single book, which is not a bad thing but has to be accomplished seamlessly.

Regardless of this downside, which is subjective, I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars, as I still find this book mesmerizing and intriguing, with perfect editing. I would highly recommend it to a good mystery lover who isn’t triggered by some harsh realities, such as deployment memories and animal grief.

The title sounds more dramatic than the story is; but I could be mistaken, I didn't read the book yet. The book seems to be delving into painful memories, but there is also a heartwarming feeling attached to the love of animals, Tracy meeting Ryan, and building a veterinary hospital.
