McDowell by William H. Coles is a work of literary fiction that combines the storylines of different characters, especially those of the protagonist, Hiram McDowell, his three children, and other significant characters. The story centers on McDowell, a successful surgeon, skilled mountain climber, and philanthropist, whose actual character is tainted by callousness, ruthlessness, and self-centeredness. Hiram is seen by his children as a loving father, but by the rest of the world as a cold, self-absorbed man who would do anything to get his way.

The story takes a huge, unexpected turn that destroys McDowell’s carefully built career and perfect life. It illustrates the subsequent consequences of the protagonist’s actions and how this humbling experience pushes him to reevaluate his life as a person and father, ultimately shaping him into a better person. Despite Hiram’s flaws, I was at least glad that he was a good father to his children. I enjoyed reading about his growth and the steps he took to make changes in his life. At a point, I began to sympathize with the character, especially considering how the story ended.

I found no errors in this book and give it a 5 out of 5 star rating because of the author’s unique approach to character development. The book was easy to read, with each chapter being short and to the point. I applaud the author’s development of each character, especially Hiram, as he was portrayed in a way that evoked strong emotions in the reader. I found no errors in the book. It was well edited, and the author’s writing style was impeccable. There was nothing to dislike about this book. What I liked most was that it did not follow the typical trend where the protagonist is always a lovable, flawless character. The book was written in a way that motivates the reader to look within and evaluate their morals and values, especially as a human being in society.

I would recommend this book to those looking for a unique and different read and to those who enjoy character-driven stories. I also recommend it to those undergoing a period of reform, searching for motivation, and seeking personal growth.
