William H. Coles' novel, McDowell, revolves around the complex and dynamic character of Hiram McDowell, a highly skilled and accomplished individual with a dark side. As a talented surgeon, mountaineer, and musician, McDowell's exceptional abilities are matched only by his ruthless ambition and lack of empathy. His ambition knows no bounds, and he will relentlessly pursue his objectives, unconcerned with the consequences or harm he may cause to others. Through McDowell's journey, the author masterfully explores the devastating consequences of unchecked self-centeredness, crafting a poignant and thought-provoking narrative that draws the reader into the depths of the human psyche.

Hiram McDowell's self-absorption and arrogance define his character, leading him to prioritize his own interests above all else. His marital history reflects this, as his third wife, Carole, ultimately left him due to his lack of emotional investment. McDowell's relationships with his children—Billie, an aspiring musician; Sophie, a single photographer; and Ann, a married woman—are likely strained as a result. His life takes a downturn when Michael O'Leary, a man he had wronged, files charges against him, marking the beginning of a series of unfortunate events that force McDowell to confront the consequences of his actions.

I enjoyed this book and consider it a masterful work by William H. Coles, expertly crafted to hold the reader's attention. I appreciated the author's neutral and detailed storytelling approach. Although the book tackles sensitive and potentially contentious issues, Coles presents them in a balanced manner. Overall, I found the novel to be engaging and thought-provoking, and I didn’t have any drawbacks or dislikes.

I am awarding this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. The book was well written but had a few mistakes. This book is a great choice for anyone who enjoys fictional drama, making it a highly recommended read for fans of the genre. If you appreciate compelling stories, complex characters, and emotional depth, then this book is sure to resonate with you.
