“High Crimes Against the Crown” by Patrick DeVaney is book one of the two-part action thriller series. Although it is mostly a product of the author’s imagination, real events influenced its creation. The narration begins with the protagonist, Conor Caldemeyer, questioning himself and the history of mankind about the decisions he made and how they had adversely affected his life, regretting the choices and actions. Conor’s first and second intentions had always been baseball and romance; becoming a police officer was his backup plan. Despite his goals, Conor ended up declaring during a sergeant interview that his ultimate life objective was to pursue a career as a police officer. The sergeant and chief delved into his fraternity connections, drug abuse, and way of life before dedicating a day to the background check. Conor spent the day with his best friend Alec at a local festival. After an obliviously drugged brownie ingestion that led to a wild party involving alcohol and a polygraph scare from the chief, he was hired as a cadet. Getting absorbed into the force was easy, with new uniforms and quick firearm training. As a junior, his duties included inspections, repeated emergency training, speed checking, and cleaning of vehicles. Life has become monotonous; tender memories of his high school sweetheart Gwendolyn always hung around him. The mundane activities frustrated him. Until one night, a call to action transpired to capture some runaway cons. Conor got injured on duty at a checkpoint, partly to blame his slacking partner. The wounds had a deep impact, and it took time for him to recover. Alec suggested a trip to Ireland to refresh and relax—a trip that turned Conor’s world upside down. Images in the book establish a connection between reality and the phrase "inspired by actual events". I found the hard-to-read Irish accent a bit annoying and disliked that part. All in all, it felt as if I were watching a movie; it had a bold and thrilling vibe. I would give the plot a five out of five since it blends action, romance, and fine storytelling in a well-balanced manner.
