Strength of an African Woman by Michael C. Tredway is a fictional story about an African woman, Sarah. Sarah's story begins with her birth to Isaac and Semhar in 1985 in a small village near Dekemhare in northern Ethiopia. At the time of her birth, Dekemhare was still part of Ethiopia, but after Eritrea got its independence from Ethiopia in 1991, it was now part of Eritrea. The story continues with her upbringing, her new-found faith in Christ, and having to run away from home and Eritrea in order to avoid conscription into the Eritrean Army, which was mandatory for all its citizens, both male and female. She even had a fake marriage to avoid being conscripted, but when their marriage ended, Sarah had to go on the run. As she journeys from Eritrea to Ethiopia to Uganda and finally to South Africa, Sarah's strength and faith in God are tested. She faces several dangerous situations, is captured and imprisoned, has to leave her comfort zone and take risks, gets married again, and then has to face life as a single mother.

Sarah's story, as told by the author in this book, is that of an African woman with great strength and courage. The author explores several themes in his book, including war, love, bravery, friendship, etc. The plot centers around Sarah and her journey through life, her courage, and her faith in God. In a society where women don't really have a voice or have to depend on a man to succeed or be fulfilled in life, Sarah beat all odds and held on to her God as the source of her strength.

The strength and faith of Sarah are the standout features of this book. The experiences and struggles that Sarah faced were not easy, but she had faith in God that he would see her through, and she showed great courage. Her decision to leave the option of a comfortable life with Daniel to go to Uganda was not an easy one, but she did it nevertheless. That's one of the things I admire about Sarah.

Reading about how much Sarah suffered in life was really sad for me, but I was glad that she was able to overcome all that and come out stronger. I commend the author for such a beautifully scripted novel; it's a book that teaches history while also having fictional characters. There was nothing I disliked about the book. The book was free of typographical errors and I commend the editor for such an impeccable editing.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. The compelling narrative, and Sarah's faith and courage were the reasons why I gave this book a perfect rating. Her story shows that no matter the situation or upbringing one has, never give up. Sarah showed that her faith in God was strong and that He would see her through whatever she faced. I recommend this book to young girls and women. Whatever discrimination or challenges you have faced or are currently facing, Sarah's story should serve as an encouragement that you can surely overcome and succeed.
