Review of Strength of an African Woman
Michael C. Tredway's Strength of an African Woman is a story of resilience set in the captivation region of the Horn of Africa. The book explores resilience, gender-based violence, Christianity, warfare, racism, and romance, making it relatable to a broad audience. It is inspired by Nina Simone's controversial song,' Four Women.' The story portrays an African woman's struggles, strength, intelligence, and faith in God. The narrative follows the journey of Sarah, who was forced to leave her hometown in Eritrea, and her faith in God helped her through difficult experiences. The book is precious for Christians as it delves into the trials and temptations that believers face while trying to maintain faith in God.
The book begins with a thought-provoking tale from Mozambique that emphasizes the position and significance of an African woman in society. Tredway presents Sarah's comprehensive background, exploring her youth and the conflict between Eritrea and Ethiopia. Although her childhood was adventurous, the transition into adulthood was complicated by cultural expectations and her obligations to the Eritrean government. Failure to meet the expectations forced Sarah to seek refuge away from home, a decision that created a captivating storyline for this book. Although her journey from Dekemhare was full of emotional and physical torture, her presence in Ethiopia opened doors for growth and change. I acknowledge the vendor woman, Isaias, Esther, and Daniel, for showing kindness to a stranger. Eventually, Sarah moved to Uganda, where she gave love a chance.
This book contains invaluable lessons for women, Christians, and Africans. First, Sarah's unwavering bravery in confronting pain and her desire to improve her life highlight significant aspects of an African woman that are often overlooked. Secondly, Christians learn that identifying with God does not exempt them from trials. Sarah had strong faith in God, but she was abused, neglected, and abandoned, yet her faith in God remained strong. Her desire to teach others about God left me in sheer admiration. Third, women learn to rely on themselves and their maker to live a fulfilling life. Although Sarah's decisions and actions were not supported by culture, law, and religion, she made her life and that of her son better by making wise decisions.
I love this book for several reasons. The author is an exceptional storyteller who uses vivid descriptions and imagery, giving the reader a sensation akin to witnessing the book's events firsthand. Additionally, the book has a smooth and suspenseful storyline that keeps you engaged throughout. Lastly, including captivating pictures and reference materials, like websites, enhances the book's credibility.
The editing team did well; I encountered no errors while reading. There is nothing I dislike about this book to deny it a perfect rating. I rate this book five out of five stars because of the positive aspects mentioned above. I recommend it to lovers of intriguing stories from Africa.
