Elastic Girl by Olivia Rana takes place in India, but it could have taken place in any part of the world. The descriptions of the different parts of India could have been written by a travel agent. The writer transports you with her details of sights, sounds, and customs of India. Even the way that the author described the foods of the area, it was almost like you were eating them yourself.
Life of a young girl, Muthu, takes twists and turns that have your emotions in knots. This character showed strength, compassion, and such wisdom for one so young. The author gives you a glimpse of her family and her relationships of people who come into Muthu’s life. Amazing characters who have depth and are described in detail as if you knew them personally. I believe there is at least one character that everyone could relate to in their personal lives.
Characters such as Mr. Prem and Mr. Kalpak are unforgettable. I enjoyed the author’s style of showing these male characters’ strengths and weaknesses. Muthu’s father played, like in all young girl’s lives, a major role in the story. This was not just a story about a young girl’s life but could be a story about the role all women play in this world. At one time or another, all women have experienced some part of what this young girl went through.
Beautifully written and very easy to read, I gave it a 4 out of 4 stars. One of the best books I have read in a long time. Women between the ages of 18 and 90 years should read this story. I am afraid that men will not read the book in its entirety. There are very important lessons for men to learn from reading this story. This book is life altering and a wake-up call for all women, from the very young to the very old. This story demonstrates that there is some good in all of us.
The conflicts were brilliant and tossed the reader as if on a tumultuous sea. This book kept this reader on her toes always due to multiple climaxes. There were so many interesting characters that I could not pick a favorite. Ms. Rana made me feel for each one of them. I told all my girlfriends and my two daughters to look for this book once it is released to the public. I look forward to Ms. Rana’s next book.
