Love My Colors by Cleanne Johnson is about a topic all too familiar to the readers but still manages to deliver its intended message uniquely and beautifully.

Natashia's skin colour was shades darker than the people living on the island. Growing up, it became one of her greatest insecurities. The book is an amazing tale about how she eventually transforms into a person who does not cower due to her skin colour and instead takes pride in it. However, her journey to this realisation was not an easy one. She was born out of wedlock and was raised single-handedly by her mother, Cece. Her father occasionally presented himself in her life, which did nothing to cement the father-daughter relationship. Moreover, she was a victim of school bullying because of her dark skin.

The author portrays the hardships of being a single mother—the guilt of not being able to give your child the best of things, the financial problems, and tackling a child's questions about their father. The theme of bullying was also dealt with in depth. Natashia was a brilliant student, always on top of her class, but that did nothing to deter people from judging her superficially. Gradually, her grades deteriorated as Natashia initially thought that maybe her good grades were what made bullying stronger. However, to her dismay, the bullying only worsened. The story shows the gradual lowering of Natashia's self-esteem. From being a child full of high spirits, she turned into someone whose first thought upon meeting someone new was that the other person probably judged her based on her appearance. The book also talks about Natashia taking the route of spirituality in finding the purpose of her life at what might be the lowest point in her life.

One of my favourite little moments from the book was how storybooks were depicted as providing a safe haven to Natashia, who was struggling with bullying. It was in a book she found parallels to her own life and felt seen. Another favourite aspect of the book for me was that, despite the societal remarks on her appearance that made her feel worthless, she had a band of people who were with her throughout her journey and genuinely loved and cared for her. I loved how Natashia grew up to be a woman who did not tolerate ill behaviour directed towards her and learnt to confront the challenges in her life. The turn of events at the end was an amazing conclusion to the book and could not have gotten any better.

Other than a few grammatical errors, I had first-rate experience reading this book. For all the reasons mentioned above, I rate this book five out of five.
