Has anyone out there read the book Shutter Island and also seen the movie? I've been meaning to read the book, but I just got the netflix movie last night too and I'm really tempted to watch it now without reading the book first. Just wondering if anyone else out there has read the book and if it knocked your socks off, maybe I will wait to watch the movie.

Im really annoyed because i watched the film without reading the book, a lot of the books im trying to read at the moment i have already seen as films so i know the endings. Do want to read the book though as the film was good.

I heard about the movie and that, as it often does, prompted me to read the book. I know people love this book but I just have to say it was predictable, so much so that I knew the ending within the first three chapters. Why did you go see the movie if you didn't like the book you may be asking. My answer to this is that I like to see what the screen writers feel is unimportant enough to leave out. It's a short read so you may want to check it out but the movie does an okay job of getting the story out.

Read the book and saw the film. Dennis LeHane is an amazing writer. Great dialog and plot twist. Scorsese added the perfect ending (which was not in the book BTW) by making the character's parting words in the film "Is it better to die a good man...or live as a monster" and then cut to black screen/roll credits...maybe a perfect ending...Effectively letting you know he had made the conscience decision to have the pre-frontal instead of living with what he had done.

I would like to see Scorsese take LeHane's Coranado and make it into a film.

Has anyone else here read Coranado?

I must admit that although the book and movie are both very predictable I love both of them. I am a big Leonardo Di Caprio fan but I think if you read the book first he was a bit young and therefore miscast for the lead role. He did however do a magnificant job.

Agreed .... DiCaprio totally miscast for the part

I didn’t read the book, but I saw the movie. It was a good movie, but not great. I hope that I will read the book itself, even if at this point I am a little disappointed by its subject.

I haven't read the book, but I believe it had a different take on the ending when compared with the movie.

The movie is not as simple as it seems. At least that's what I'd like to think. The 'predictable' part was supposed to be predictable.

I finished the book 15 mins before I went to see the movie.

All in all I preferred the book (but I ususally do).
However I did enjoy the movie (unlike others usch as The Virgin suicides which in my opinion did NOT live up to the level of the book).

I went with someone whon hadn't read the book and they also enjoyed the film.

I have the book on my to read list but have'nt gotten to it yet .... really enjoyed the movie but the ending is very ambiguous hopefully the book (when I get to it) is more rewarding.

Havent read the book but saw the movie and i have to say that i saw the twist coming a mile off! Still a great movie though, is the book worth checking out?

I didn't read the book yet but saw the movie and I usually want to read the book first but this time I didn't have the time. I did like the movie and am hoping I'll enjoy the book even more. I do like Dennis Lehane, he writes very well as I remember Mystic River which also had a twist at the end.

I read the book right after seeing the film.
Not that huge a difference to my eyes.

DiCaprio seems to be into that sort of role now. I thought his role in Inception was quite similar in make up. Yes. Lots of differences but the basic personality and unsureness of the characters, plus the wife made it very similar for me.

I did like both films, and would even go back and see Inception once more just to be sure I have the layering correct.
