Review of Whatever Happened To Rosa Lee?
Ben travels from Alabama to the west to help his grandfather on his ranch. He seeks directions from the sheriff's office. As it turns out, Rosa Lee, the sheriff's older daughter, who arrives shortly after him, offers to help him. Off they go with their horses. The journey is quite smooth. Rosa Lee is benevolent enough to lead Ben up to the point he can easily locate his grandfather's cabin.
However, there is trouble for Ben. Rosa Lee is nowhere to be found after they part ways, and as it turns out, Ben is the last known person in touch with her. The mystery behind her disappearance thickens when Rosa Lee's horse returns to the family house without her. Sheriff Jackson, Rosa Lee's father, is infuriated. He will not spare anybody in his quest for justice, not even his deputy, Winters.
So many things are going on, and quickly. Ben has been arrested and thrown into jail. A search party is organized. Ben's grandpa invites Reverend Johnson to come see his grandson. Reverend Johnson introduces Ben to the idea of faith in God and prayer. The residents lament the loss of their cows to rustlers. The circuit judge will arrive in town soon to hear Ben's case and that of the rustlers nabbed during the public search for Rosa Lee. What truly happened to Rosa Lee?
Whatever Happened To Rosa Lee? by J. L. Stone is set in the American Old West. Stone's introduction of elements like prairie, shack, cabin, lawmen, cattle rustling, circuit judge and stagecoach gave the story historical richness and depth. The language, while contemporary, also bears marks of this period. Take, for instance, the inclusion of expressions like yonder and a ways. The author did a great job with the setting and plot development. She took me to that time past, and her vivid descriptions and live word choices gave me the chance to fully experience its economic, legal and social realities.
The story is very suspenseful, with twists and turns every now and then. Hopes build up and vanish without warning, and you find yourself wondering what could be the next step going forward. The characterization is exceptional. Sheriff Jackson acted well in his capacity as a sheriff and a grieving father. Ben's transition as the story unfolds is fascinating. His moves at the peak of the tension surprised me. Rosa Lee's dynamic personality not only changes our perception of her when the story starts but also sparks a series of incidents that drive the plot forward. Deputy Winters, Mr. Sweetwater and other characters featured in this story are not left out; everything was just so good.
This story explores a teenager's attempts to clear his name off a murder accusation, highlights the spiritual awakening that comes along the way and blends the societal realities of that period in-between. These were perfectly executed, and for these reasons, I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. I did not dislike anything in it. There are some religious elements like prayer, faith in God and biblical quote, but they are not heavy, and the book is not preachy. The mystery and the historical realities of the American Old West take dominance. Therefore, I think Whatever Happened To Rosa Lee? will appeal to every audience, especially those interested in stories that feature the aforementioned themes. This book was exceptionally well edited.
