I would give this novel a 5 out of 5. I couldn't put it down, and I even finished it within a day. I loved both of the main characters and could relate to Natashia's character quite a bit as well.
I had never heard of this author before, but based on this one, I want to explore some of her other works. Her writing style and the way she formatted this novel were a part of why I enjoyed it. This book teaches great lessons about patriarchy, misogyny, single mothers' struggles, and racism. A woman of color raises her daughter as a single mother and has to try to protect her from the world and sometimes even her father as he comes and goes in her life.
I enjoyed that the format didn't just focus on a year or two of Natasha's life but showed how things like racism and the absence of her father impacted her and her family's life. From showing Cece and Jack's relationship from the beginning until Nastashia has her child and then an important lesson she passes down to him and even names her after someone she could call a father for the first time in her life-Robert.
All these lessons and hardships this character went through in her life racism, bullying, an absent father, etc. It showed all these stages of her life and how she got through them.
I also liked the undertones and how it was shown that young children can also pick up on a lot and know a lot more than we give them credit for. Cece never even tried to sway Nastashia's mind one way or another on her daughter, yet her daughter was able to pick up on certain cues and overhear certain things, and she knew that her father wasn't reliable or even a good person in general.
I will definitely recommend this book to others, as I feel like it has a lot of important and relatable moments in it that readers can connect to I honestly didn’t even find anything I thought could make it better as I found it to be written very well; the plot was good, characters were relatable and raw. There was nothing that popped out to me while reading it that I thought needed improvement.
