Strong-Heart by the author Charlie Sheldon is an amazing book; I find myself growing very fond of books which don’t cause the reader to grow weary drudging through a slow or boring beginning. This book doesn’t get off to a slow start and is certainly not boring, from the first introduction to it’s lovable characters at the beginning to the bitter-sweet ending.
Sarah Cooley, the heroine of the story, is aptly portrayed as the typical obnoxious teenager who finds herself passed around amongst family members after losing her parents. Eventually she ends up with a grandfather who didn’t even know she existed until his ex-wife came knocking on his door during a horrendous storm. Sarah seems as pleased to meet and spend time with her grandfather, Tom, as he is to have her come knocking----meaning, both are miserable.
Tom and a couple of his Native American friends have a hiking/camping outing planned that Tom finds no way to cancel out on such short notice. Should they take the young ‘hellion cat’ along on their trip into the mountains or find some way to dump her on someone else. Eventually, after much discussion and disgruntled argument---from all sides---it is decided that it is best to take the young girl along with them. It’s going to be a tossup to see who breaks first on this trip.
The hiking trip takes a tragic and surprising turn when Sarah becomes lost in the forest after losing her temper with her grandfather and striking out on her own. When all involved think things can’t get any worse, ‘Murphy’s Law’ kicks in and things go from worse to much worse. The question is, who is taking who on this quest for survival?
If as a child you were ever fascinated by finding arrow heads or any object that could have been used and lost by a people who roamed our lands hundreds or maybe hundreds of thousands of years ago, you will want to read this book. I loved the extra-informative touch of the maps at the beginning of the book; I hated that the story ended too soon. I have always had an avid love of the stories of the ice age and the age of cavemen and dinosaurs.
I rate the book a 4 out of 4 stars; it was well written and very well edited as I found only one error through out the whole book as listed below.
Pg. 68------Last sentence………..., her faced (face?) scratched and torn, ……
