In A Kind of Hush, we meet the Mackie family: Matt, Summer, Gabe, and Willa. They have already gone through a major tragedy and are working to mend the pieces of their family in its aftermath. One day, they decided to get out in nature together to bond and hopefully heal, but then it all went horribly wrong. Summer dies, leaving the rest of the family behind. Matt has no memory of what happened the day his wife died. Willa refuses to talk about her mom almost entirely, and Gabe misses his mom. What happened on that cliff? Was it a terrible accident or something more serious? You’ll have to read to find out.

This was a very engaging story from start to finish. I was always curious about how everything would play out for everyone involved, and especially what happened to Summer. Every character experienced tremendous growth across the whole book. It was a very real and emotional read with just the right amount of mystery to keep you going. However, there were two things I felt took away from the book. I felt like the parts from Victor's perspective didn’t add much to the overall story. The information we receive from those sections could have all come through other, more critical characters. Without giving anything away, I didn’t care for the brief turn Matt’s character takes towards the end of the book. It undermined his relationship and love for Summer, in my opinion, and wasn’t needed.

With those things in mind, I give this book a 3 out of 5. A Kind of Hush was very enjoyable and kept me wanting to see the ending, even with my minor complaints. This is a heartfelt book about grief and forgiveness with a bit of a “whodunit” spin.

This book would probably make me cry from beginning to end. People deal with grief differently; some need to talk about it, others just don't want to deal with it at all. I hope this family manages to come through and to support each other in their grief.
