After I read Larsson's trilogy I came across Johan Theorin's books "Echoes From the Dead" and "The Darkest Room". Read "Echoes" first as "The Darkest Room" has a couple of common characters and references to the first novel.

"Echoes" is similar to "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" in that the protagonist is trying to solve an old mystery. The books are set in Norway and the writing struck me as reflecting the serenity of the little village - hard to explain but definitely worth a look if you are prepared to try new authors.

"The Darkest Room" also refers to an old mystery but is interwoven with a present day mystery too. Very enjoyable.

Happily Theorin has a new book out soon.

It took a while but I finally read 'Echoes of the Dead' & I am most grateful to you for the recommendation. A remarkable book & a superb read.
I am now on the list for The Darkest Room at my local library.
