Review by oolong -- Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon

[Following is a volunteer review of "Strong Heart" by Charlie Sheldon.]

[rbc=4]id156166-125[/rbc]I’m giving Strongheart by Charles Sheldon, a coming of age story of a young girl, three out of four stars.

Just as Tom Olsen and his two friends are packing their gear for their camping trip the following day, they hear a knock on the front door. But who could it be? It was late at night and pitch dark. Nobody called at those hours.

Undaunted, Tom answers the door. Standing before him is an older woman and a young girl. The woman introduces the girl as Sarah, a granddaughter that Tom didn’t even know he had. Sarah is poorly dressed and has piercings in places other than her ears.

“Take her,” the woman tells Tom. “I’m done with her.”

And so that sets the stage for Sarah. She’s rebellious, misunderstood, unloved, and a misfit. As a result, she’s rebellious, rude, intolerable, and a load of trouble.

Tom, ever the gentleman, is undaunted by her looks. He invites Sarah into his home. Rather than cancelling his plans, he informs his friends that Sarah will be accompanying them. Sarah settles down in a huff butt has no control over her situation. She’s going on a camping trip with three complete strangers whether she likes it or not.

To Sarah’s shock, though, she does enjoy the camping trip. They hike through the mountain in Washington while Sarah learns the rich history of the area and her Indian ancestors. For the first time in her life, Sarah is not being pre-judged. The others welcome her into their group and treat her like a friend. And, for the first time, Sarah stops rebelling and begins to enjoy life. She learns about nature and the past of the Indians and actually enjoys it.

Besides enjoyment, Tom has another motive for the trip: he needs to return an item that was removed from an Indian site years ago. It belongs to the Indians, although they’re long dead. His friends try to talk him into keeping the item. It’s rich in history and, of course, valuable. Tom, however, is more interested in preserving his ancestors and their grounds.

Sarah really blossoms as a character on the trip. She transforms from a rebellious and obnoxious teen to a curious, eager, and energetic person. On the hike, looking at the splendor and beauty of the mountains and landscape, she’s more like a curious child than a teen who is angry at the world.

Sarah is a spectacular character. She grows so much through the novel. Tom is an honest, eager, and kind gentleman who is the first person to give Sarah a chance. He’s non-judgmental and honest, two traits that will endear him to a reader’s heart.

This novel was good, but it had problems as far as point-of-view, that is, who is telling the story. The novel switched points of view constantly, and even the minor characters shared their point of view.
