Unexpected Surprises

What book did you recently read that took you by surprise in a good way? For me it has been Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet. I didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I have been.

Encounter at North Road House by Jerome Christopher King. Im a huge horror fan and can usually sense a dud a mile off and this book had no recommendations or background to the author so i was very skeptical, turns out it was a great comic horror with some memorable scenes and a central character (the house) which is plucked straight from a child's nightmare :D
