Strong Heart is the story of Sarah, a thirteen years old girl who is suddenly thrown into a treacherous journey with her grandfather, Tom. Tom, who had no knowledge of Sarah's existence until she showed up at his front door just before their departure, is talked into bringing the rebellious teen along by his best friend, William. The three of them, along with William's daughter, Myra, spend the next several days making their way to Tom's grandfather's grave deep in the forest. Tom wishes to pay respects to his grandfather and return an artifact that he removed many years prior. Along the way, Sarah becomes lost and is gone for eight days. When she returns, she has a story that seems impossible, but the things she knows, can only be known by someone who was there. They return to Tom's house only for Sarah to once again be taken away from Tom. Somehow, they must make the journey once again. Now, they need the artifact in order to stop the destruction of the native lands.

I rather enjoyed this story with its deep descriptions and the continuous journey of each character. Although the book is predominantly about Sarah, we do learn quite a bit about the other characters. William is what Tom regularly calls a shaman, although William tends to deny this title. He seems to be the only one willing to believe in Sarah when she returns with a drawing of a bear that has been long extinct.

Sarah experiences the angst and anger of a typical teenager, along with a separate sense of abandonment when she feels she has no family. This feeling is intensified when Tom does not seem to believe her about the bear or the unbelievable journey she embarks upon while missing for eight days. Her journey into the past, into the time of her ancestors, is both inspiring and completely unexpected. She learns about her past and the strength that she carries within herself as she goes through this arduous ordeal. She may be only a teenager, and barely even that, but she has the strength of a warrior.

The descriptions of the surrounding areas are intensely descriptive and never leave any doubt as to what the characters are seeing, hearing, and feeling. You can almost see the land develop around you as you read and become invested in the future of these characters. Trouble seems to dog their every step, and it's never clear if they will succeed or fail.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 because of the attention to detail and in-depth storytelling. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in reading about native legend. It will have you on the edge of your seat.
