Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is a story that talks about one's native heritage, one's forgotten culture and the mysteries they left behind. It describes the struggles encountered by our forefathers in search of an abundant land free from bigger and stronger predators. It also describes our deepest desire to know how our ancestor lived in the time of ice age.
The story begins when Sarah shows up at Tom's doorstep with her grandmother, Ruth. Tom never know he had a granddaughter because his daughter runs away and never talk to them since. Her untimely coming put a hindrance to Tom's plan as he, his friend William, and William's daughter, Myra, are getting ready for a hike in Olympic National Park in respect to the grave of Tom's grandfather, Bob-Bob. Unbeknownst to them, Sarah is the one leading them on their journey.
Sarah's ornery never portrayed in the bad light. Instead, it gives us the inspiration on how to stay put in terms of danger. We can see how well she coped with strangers around her, including the grandfather she never met, and how she defended herself when they never believe her.
She is a strong female character. She's also smart and mature than girls her age. Her skill using thrower is excellent too giving the time she only had practicing was on her dreams and outside Fletcher's backyard. Tom and William taught us not to give up finding the truth. How both of them tried their best to stop the Corporate drilling in National Park using the artifact Bob-Bob's grandfather found and both of them is not ashamed of their native blood.
The foreshadowing of the two events was portrayed in a smooth way understandable to all the readers. It offers pieces in the story that hooks you up from the beginning until the end. I like how the author used the characters to convey a story that uses archeological studies, scientific facts, history, legends, and myths without making it look like an academic work. The portraying of two different worlds is beyond genius. The transition from the modern times and to ancient times is really impressive. This is the kind of book I keep reading even after I finished reading it.
I give this story 4 out of 4 stars. You can clearly see the author's hard work reflected in the way he wrote the story. It was a well-paced and a well-written book that will pull you into the unpredictable world of Sarah. If you love historical fiction and adventure, I strongly recommend this book to you. You will love it as much as I do.
