Illicit Love by Iris Alfaro is an enticing romance book. I appreciate a good romance story, so its description captivated me. The author produced an incredible and passionate story that would truly grip you. There is nothing like a good romance book to get you excited. I must say, this isn’t the typical romance full of stereotypes. This is a realistic book looking into the lives of professionals and those at their careers’ peak who should have all the answers. An accomplished professional woman toys with her marriage but I better start from the beginning.
Orlando, a mortgage broker, was unhappy with his life. He was married to Carrie who was a cardiovascular surgeon and was barely around to take care of their children and to perform her uxorial duties. He referred to himself as a “glorified soccer mom” since it was his responsibility to take care of their young children. Although he cherished his children immensely, he was dissatisfied with his wife’s absence because of her job. He could not resist the advances of the beautiful Angela and his affair led to the uncovering of secrets. Orlando soon finds out that there are some secrets best left undiscovered.
The story is a narration told from the third-person point of view. The author’s style of dialogue kept me engaged and completely interested in the story. This book had everything I wanted in a romance book I was not disappointed at all with the storyline. The banter between Orlando and Marc contributed to the comic relief throughout the book. Orlando’s story was intriguing to read about. I always wondered how people who were busy with their work or personal lives managed to make their marriage work. Although I was a bit disappointed at the characters then, I gave their situation much thought I began to sympathize with Orlando. This book will compel you to re-evaluate your relationships and commitments to your partners and your vows. The book presents a theme of love; betrayal; infidelity and feminism.
This book was easy to follow although I discovered a grammatical error. The error did not detract from the book. The book also has a cliffhanger ending which I find frustrating.
I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. The writing style is direct and straight-forward, and the book is well-organized. I recommend this book to those who enjoy romance and to mature readers. I do not recommend this book to young readers because it has sexual contents which will be inappropriate for them.
