Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is a novel that explores the depth of adventure and the molding of family. Charlie Sheldon uses a captivating storyline that allows readers to stay engaged and anticipate the next hurdle. The novel explores the depths of family, native history, science, and the desire to make a change in a community, which is relative in many people’s lives. The story takes place in the North Pacific area and focuses on Native American lands as well as the legends behind them.

As Tom Olsen is packing for long hiking trip there is a vicious wind beating against the house. Tom’s friend William and William’s daughter Myra, who are American Indians are also getting ready to leave on the hiking trip when there is a knock on the door. No one expected Tom’s ex-wife and a young girl would be on the other side. Tom’s ex-wife Ruth reveals the news that changes his life from that moment forward. The young girl, Sarah is Ruth and Tom’s granddaughter that they didn’t know existed. At this moment, Tom believed that the hiking trip would have to be called off, but William believes that it would be good for Sarah to learn about the ancient lands. At first, Sarah was against this trip, but by the end of the story, readers see her blossom into a strong woman.

The hiking trip brings physical struggles for Tom and William who are older in age, but Sarah goes through the most traumatic experience. Legends become real and present themselves to Sarah in unique ways. Although Sarah’s experiences portray a possible truth of native legends, others have a tough time believing in them. Tom and Sarah struggle to be on the same page which causes a strained relationship. Family struggles are portrayed throughout the entire novel, which allows readers to relate to individual characters and their personal struggles.

Charlie Sheldon created an adventure through words and imagery. The use of imagery allows the readers to feel a part of the story. Through words the hikes and the struggles become real. The plot of the story and Charlie Sheldon’s ability to jump from the main story and then to Sarah’s story creates more levels of the truth. I thought the novel was well written and captured my attention in its entirety. Some chapters seemed long but overall, I found the storyline very relatable. The novel causes readers to question their own beliefs on legends and stories found in history.

I rate this book 4 out of 4. Charlie Sheldon brings a story that focuses on change, struggles, science vs. mystical beliefs, and the security of a community. I found the novel intriguing and believe that everyone should read it.
