Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon starts off with the entrance of Sarah, a young teenage girl that is being dropped off into her extended family who, until that time, did not even know of her existence. Having already had a difficult young life, Sarah seems a rebellious, headstrong and uncertain young girl. However, with an already planned hiking trip underway, she ends up getting dragged along, learning about her First Nation ancestry. When problems arise with both the weather, and changes in ownership of the land, Sarah ends up separated from the group. This in turn leads her on her own spiritual journey and learning more than she could have imagined about her new family and the history that it stems from.
The story walks you through their hiking and camping experience, the vivid landscape imagery making it seem like you are right there with them, enjoying the nature that their journey has to offer. I would rate Charlie Sheldon's Strong Heart a 4 out of 4 stars. Though I will admit it was not what I was initially expecting, as it shifts part way through to that of storytelling, bordering more along the lines of how old myths and stories are told. That being said, it is still an incredibly well-written novel with no errors that I could find, and the story is engaging and different than what I expected, but still managed to hold my attention and it easily allowed me to feel like I was travelling with the characters.
One of the things I liked most about the story was how easy it was to get into and stay engaged with, and there was nothing that I found jarring or that took me out of the story. It was obviously written and edited professionally, which is something I appreciate and feel is important to mention.
As someone who is geographically challenged, I found the maps given at the beginning to be very helpful and were nice to give the story a sort of context as to where it was taking place. Also, another addition that I enjoyed was the small picture glyph encircling the heading number at the beginning of each chapter. It gave the novel a very polished feeling, and in addition, also related back to the story line later on.
Overall, if you are someone who enjoys both nature, as well as a little bit of First Nation history and story-telling, I would really look into Charlie Sheldon's Strong Heart. He manages to write an intriguing story, incorporating nature as well as the spiritual. It is a very easy read, which allows one to be totally immersed into Sheldon's novel, making it easy to forget that you are reading at all.
