Finished 'Sister' today. IMO a very absorbing, interesting & original read. I thought at first it was going to be a sentimental & mawkish story but a few pages in it morphed into a dam good thriller. The style I found difficult at times all that time & dialogue changing made it a challenge to keep track of timelines & of who the central character is talking to but by the end of the book I could understand why she adopted that particular (and in fact quite clever) style. There were a few points in the story which struck me as a bit implausible & annoying - the CPS lawyer constantly have these lunch meetings & Beatrice's obsession with the sexual attractiveness of the police man, the doctor ... every man she came in contact with in fact.
All in all I would highly recommend Sister & I also think it would make a superb movie.

I still haven't gotten mine from my local library. I placed a hold on it about a week ago, but it still hasn't come in yet!!

CURSE YOU, EVIL LIBRARY!!

EDIT: Got it in the library now, and just finished reading my current book and had nothing else to read, which was pretty nifty. I'll start reading it tomorrow, as I didn't have the time to pick it up today.

EDIT2: Started reading it now, and I don't like the format, ie. she is writing it as a letter to her sister, and how it goes back and forth between the past and present. It's certainly intriguing though.

Just finished "Sister" as well Fran. I must say that it was better that I was expecting, expecially for a debut novel. I think the twist at the end when you find out that the whole novel she has been tied up and has completely fabricated the lawyer character and talking to her dead sister gave it a kick up to a higher level for me. I love Lupton's descriptive style of writing. I loved how she kept jumping from talking to the lawyer to talking to her sister both in the first person. Also the little flashbacks which are interspersed throughout the chapters. Lovely touch.
Lupton has picked an issue which is very popular in the press and around the world at the moment. Genetic engineering, gene therapy etc, etc. It seems that most people are very divided on this very important issue. Any way I did really enjoy it and will be looking out for her next book. You are so right it really would make a great movie, expecially with that twist. :)
