I'm thinking about reading The Secret. You know the religious type book that everybody and their cousin went crazy about a few years back. I haven't the slightest clue why I've suddenly had a notion to look into it. I have what's been reffered to as a "very strange view of religion" and for some reason I tend to stray away from any kind of religious works sought after by the masses. When all the hype was going around I pretty much ignored it, so I don't even really know what book's about other than some kind of spiritual something maybe? I don't know really......

Has anybody read it, and if so what did you think about it?

Hey Tessie, I have never heard of it, let alone read it, but your post makes it sound very interesting. I don't read religious books as a rule either, but with everybody's cousin going crazy after reading it, I may just have to add it to the TBR list.

Well, I've never even given it a thought as far as reading it, but for some reason the idea just popped in my head. Supposedly it's like the secret of life and fulfillment. Ya know, wealth, happiness, and good health, but in a religious/spiritual way. Kind of like a spiritual self help book I guess. All I know is that Oprah had field day over it, said it was "life-changing" and had like 2 shows featured around the book and then it made New York Times Best Seller list. There was also controversy though, something about it being misleading.....

Terrible load of codswallop IMHO
I read it but thankfully I did not buy it ... would have felt really cheated if I had. For what it's worth the basic premise is that if you think hard enough about something you can make it happen ... harnessing cosmic power apparently (bullsh1t IMO).

A very successful marketing strategy would be my assessment but if you feel a need to read it then at least borrow it & don't waste your hard earned £/$ on it.

You would be right in thinking that I did not think much of it but then I'm probably a cynical git ... go with Jasper Fforde instead (I'm very much in favor of laughter as the best medicine)

I don't put too much faith in something Oprah is endorsing! I think sometimes people go gaga over something just to go along with Oprah; rather than have a mind of their own.

I did not realise it was a self help book and after the way you have described it in your second post, I will definitely give it a big miss. I have nothing against people reading self help books and I am sure that many people get genuine help from some ot them but they are just not for me.

Well, I'm certainaly glad I posted before I went out to get it. Although, I was just going to borrow it from the library, but decided to ask about it first. I think I'm gonna pass on it. Thanks for the suggestion Fran, I'll look into Jasper Fforde. Never heard of him, but I'll check it out.

You have really got into old Jasper FFord havn't you Fran. Have you got the second book yet, at least have it on order please. Mine should be arriving very soon and we can have a FFord discussion. Maud says it is even better than "Eyre" so I can't wait. Also "We were the Mulvaneys" should be turning up any tick of the clock as well. Maybe even today.

I have a hold on it in my local library ... I try not to Kindle books my library has available ... we're in a recession over here

Now I have to try to get out of work early to get to the library ... life is so complicated

The Secret is a great book and may people told that i thelped them a lot. As for me, I am going to read it soon and I hope it will help me as well.

Wow, self-help books really have hit a new low if the premise of this is to think hard enough and the 'cosmic energy' will aid you....that was quite funny to type actually. I do remain open minded to the likes of hypnotherapy etc to help people in their lives but i think most people can see through the nonsense that is The Secret by remembering the simple lesson that most of us learned as kids that "You cant always get what you want!".

I haven't read the book but I've seen a movie on it's basis and it was the biggest bullshit ever.
