Turn About Is Fair Play by Tari K. Robinson is a fictional tale about Tracy Raymond, who fell hard for Jake Benjamin, a Rock star. She was a regular girl who knew she had zero chances of being with the man of her dreams as they swam in different circles. Nonetheless, she carried a torch for him for five and a half years! Janie and AJ, her best friends, tried to talk her out of her obsession but failed. Seeing that Tracy’s mind was set, they proffered a solution against their better judgment. A love potion! The trio then drove to the bodega’s office. Minutes later, Tracy was in possession of the pricey elixir.
Fate smiled on her and the opportunity presented itself. She was able to be in the same space as Jake and offered him a drink laced with the potion. As soon as he drank it, he went into a coughing fit but regained his composure. After that, he was hooked and a few weeks later, they were married!
The potion started to fade and Tracy ran back to the Gypsy only to discover that the potion had a timeline of 4-5 weeks and that the subsequent purchase of the elixir was twice the initial amount of $10,000. Perplexed but unflinching, she purchased another bottle as she didn’t want to lose the love of her life. The Gypsy warned her not to exceed the required dose as it could lead to undesirable results. However, the double dose of the potion found its way into Jake’s system and sent him into a tailspin. He became the definition of aggression, paranoia, and poured out his frustration on Tracy by beating her black and blue! Will she continue in her resolve to keep him ‘in love’ with her?
Tari K. Robinson has done an excellent job with this masterpiece. She kept me rooted in my seat from start to finish and despite my busy schedule; I finished reading it in less than 2 days. The end of the book was exceptional! It left my mouth agape and my thoughts reeling back and forth. I feel the book should be adapted into a movie as it will do very well.
The book made me realize that the wrong kind of love is like an addiction which is just as bad as a drug addiction. Tracy’s ‘love’ made her do unspeakable things. She practically went bankrupt and went as far as stealing Janie’s grandmother’s bracelet, a priceless heirloom, just so she could buy another bottle of the potion. At one point, I became disgusted with her character, but soon felt sorry for her when Jake started dealing with her.
What I liked most about the book is its structure. The author’s engaging writing style made it easy to read. It was fast-paced and had a natural flow that made it a major page-turner. There was really nothing I didn’t like about the book except that I wished the characters were more developed. I didn’t feel any connection with the characters. I wish I knew about Tracy’s background and what made her tick, as that would have helped me understand her character better.
The book was professionally edited as I found just one error in it, which was a breath of fresh air. It increased my respect for the author. With all that said, I rate Turn About Is Fair Play 4 out of 4 stars. It is a well-deserved rating as the book is nothing short of amazing. I recommend this book to those who favor its genre and for those who long for a fast-paced book with a twist. You won’t be disappointed!
