Adam Chad Kilroy never really fit in. He was raised in a village of Authorians, a society that worships the Author, their creator. Their rules are strict, and they work hard to be seen as good characters. When Adam is caught with June, a girl from another town, he becomes a social outcast. Lonely, Adam devotes himself to solitary pursuits, developing a reputation for being weird. Years later, he learns that the girl he loved is a member of a society demonized by the Authorians, and he begins to question everything he knows.

My Author is Dead is written by Michel Bruneau. It’s a satirical take on traditional novels, the characters who inhabit their pages, and even authors themselves. I found this book to be very enjoyable. It has interesting things to say about every subject it covers.

The characters in My Author is Dead are excellent. Adam is a great main character. He has a habit of fantasizing about things he wants to say to people, but can't. It's charming, and it is a very realistic quirk that many readers could probably relate to. The antagonist, Cassandra, is also notable. We’ve all probably met a girl just like her, and it makes it easy to empathize with Adam for having to deal with her.

If you are interested in reading this novel, I’d encourage you to read it patiently. The beginning of My Author is Dead is pretty obtuse. In quick succession, we are introduced to elements of the world that aren’t elaborated on very clearly. The story begins in medias res, which is then interrupted to go back to the beginning. When you reach the point the novel began at for the second time, everything should be much more enjoyable and easier to understand.

My Author is Dead also has a tendency to wander away from the plot. Certain problems and ideas are introduced with little to no setup, and sometimes they have lackluster payoffs. It also has strange pacing. Pivotal moments are glossed over at times, and too much attention is paid to seemingly inane details. There are strong hints given later on that these unusual moments of pacing and lack of focus are intentional. Because of this, I won't lower my rating, but it is something you might want to consider if you are purchasing this book.

Regardless of its oddities, I thought My Author is Dead was a wonderful book. It was gripping and clever, and once I got a few chapters in I found myself unable to put it down. I really hope that Michel Bruneau writes a sequel because I would love to see more of the world that this novel introduces. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
