Union Novels

I got a tip on Ken Kesey's Union novel peeking out from under the glare of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, but the tip banded it under the collective 'union novels'. Now, firstly, I've never heard of calling a book a 'union' novel - you might say The Ragged Trousered Philanthropist is one - and secondly, as I'm reading it, I think it is clearly a beat novel. It's got touches of Kerouac, the stylistic features are pure beat, the modernist edge is tail end modernism spot on - I think this novel is being maligned with this label.
Does anyone know more about the novel, its reception and status? I'm UK based so US lit, whilst a pet hobby of mine, is not my big area of specialism.
