My Author is Dead by Michel Bruneau is a very creative book that draws the reader in to a new world inhabited by Authorians, Kafkaists, and Illiterantes, to name just a few. Each group has specific ideologies and rules that are discussed by the characters, including discrimination between groups based on beliefs. These groups are comparable to current political or religious groups. The story is told through the eyes of the main character, Adam Chad Kilroy. Adam is trying to fit in to this world while having his own, sometimes cynical, beliefs that create friction with the leaders of his group.
I found this book to be very well-written and unique in that an entire new world was created including interactions between differing communities. There is a large amount of witty dialogue between the characters that kept the story interesting and fresh. Once I was immersed in this new world, I found it difficult to put this book down. The author was able to express the confusion Adam felt as he was thrown into dangerous and complex situations giving the reader a glimpse into his thought process and the actions he took. Depending on the situation, he became both sympathetic and abrasive at one time.
I especially enjoyed Adam’s interaction with the other characters. The author was able to successfully convey the amount of emotion and frustration experienced by this main character. I found the main characters to be well rounded and the conversations between the characters to be informative to the story and interesting to the reader. My favorite character was the grandfather. The conversations between Adam and his grandfather were heartwarming. I think that character would remind most readers of their grandfather or the grandfather they wish they had. In a story where Adam had few people in his corner, his grandfather was there to listen to his problems and provide good advice. I would have liked to see more interactions between these two characters.
There is also a story within a story that is very thought provoking involving Adam and the Author. There is a lot of discussion throughout the book about whether there is an Author or not. Some groups believe in an all-knowing Author and others do not. The chapters devoted to Adam and the Author are interesting and entertaining. As explained by the title of the book, the Author is also a character and is referred to throughout the book. The relationship of the characters to the Author is one of the central themes in the book.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and give it a rating of 4 out of 4. It covered a wide variety of interesting situations that would appeal to a large audience of readers. Specifically, I would highly recommend it to anyone that enjoys fantasy books that create a new world. It also explores relationships and has a love story that would appeal to young adult readers. Its philosophical aspects would appeal to anyone interested in that genre.
