The story of Strong Heart is mainly centered around Sarah, an angry, troubled thirteen-year-old girl whose mother died, a father who dropped her off with grandparents she’d never met for a summer in the beautiful, natural, but yet, remote Olympic Peninsula, which for a youth today might as well be purgatory with no internet or T.V. To cope, Sarah, an incredibly talented artist, loses herself in her drawings that tell their own stories.
Then there is Tom, her grandfather, who unbeknownst to him, did not even know she existed until she was unexpectedly dropped off on his doorstep just as he was preparing to leave for a hiking expedition up into Olympic National Park to honor his own grandfather and return a precious artifact with his two closest Native American companions, William (Walleye) and his daughter, Myra.
Against Tom and his friend’s better judgment, they went forth with their plans and dragged Sarah along on their journey. Overcome with anger, Sarah runs off, but Tom and his friends are determined to find her. After eight days, thinking they may never find her, she reappears to tell an unbelievable story of what took place while she was gone.
A little slow at first, the story progresses as it begins to pick up intensity adding some unexpected twists and turns when archeological history, great legends, and myths are brought in along with the need to protect and preserve the untapped land from the usual modern-day scavengers who will stop at nothing to try and get what they want. Most of the story is told through William and Sarah’s heartfelt point of views which possess a tendency to tug on one’s emotions. I feel many young readers will relate closely to Sarah, her struggles, feistiness, and in the end, strength that pulls her through to receive a well-earned Native American name.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, although at times it was a bit confusing and I needed to re-read some parts, but I attribute it to more to being unfamiliar with the historical topic than the writing. The main aspect I did not like was the abrupt ending because I felt as if some questions were left unanswered for me as the reader, maybe a sequel will answer them?
With minimal errors I only found one issue that interfered with the flow of reading in the visuals as well as in the words, which is spelling out of numbers. Overall, with great consideration these are minor details when rating this novel, therefore, I rate it a 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend Strong Heart for anyone who enjoys adventure, history, magic, and the idea that anything is possible.
