The Spirit Of Want is a tragic novel written by multiple award winning literary fiction writer, William H. Coles. The novel is set in Atlanta during the 1980s - 1990s. The Spirit Of Want is the story of Lucy MacMiel, a successful defence attorney. Lucy takes on the case of an evangelist accused of raping a minor. Lucy ends up having an affair with the evangelist and loses the case. She is disbarred and decides to join the fleeing evangelist in Africa. She is poisoned in Africa by a jealous church member and after an argument with the evangelist about his infidelity she angrily returns to Atlanta. Lucy is in penury as her father has disowned her and her former friends and associates want nothing to do with her.

Lucy gets a job offer in California and moves there. She is later fired due to a misconduct and she returns to the evangelist who was cleared of all charges against him. Later on, she is diagnosed with uremia. There is a scandal involving the evangelist and he is to be indicted for tax fraud and misuse of church funds. It is also discovered that he was guilty of the rape case. As the scandal evolves, the home nurse helping Lucy with her dialysis decides to leave and Lucy has to stay full time in Atlanta. Lucy decides to pay the evangelist a surprise visit and discovers that he has been cheating on her with an associate of his and she leaves. She decides to never see him again. On new year's eve, Lucy goes to her favourite tavern and after a reflection on her life, decides to be a better person. Unfortunately, on her way home, she slips on a wooden bridge and passes out. Her sister and former husband find her and take her to a hospital. However, Lucy is confirmed dead at the hospital.

The Spirit Of Want is a captivating novel. I like that the chapters are short and this urges you to read on. This novel is unpredictable and that's what I like most about it. There's so much drama going on, it makes it hard to skip a page. I also like that it's a progressive novel; the author didn't spend much time on a particular phase of the novel so it's hard to get bored. I don't think there's any thing about this book that I do not like.

I think this book will appeal to everyone that loves reading novels. Even those that do not like reading lengthy novels will enjoy this because the chapters are short and they will have this feeling of progress and this will keep them hooked. Lovers of family and betrayal genres will also find this interesting. This book will appeal least to romance lovers and lovers of happily ever after.

I rate this book 4 out of 4. It is professionally written and edited. The spirit of want will be appreciated by all regardless of gender or status. It's a story filled with lessons that make you reflect on your life and appreciate those that are there for you.

There's a lot going on in this novel and, certainly, the main character goes through a lot of twists and turns. I wonder what happens after she's pronounced dead and why she chooses to defend such a man. I love a good page-turner, so I'll add this novel to my to-read shelf. Thank you!
