Strong Heart, a gripping adventure novel written by Charlie Sheldon explores themes pertaining to anthropology, conservation, dysfunctional families, and migration. The story is set in Washington State's Olympic Peninsula.
Sheldon weaves a compelling plot filled with mystery and gritty characters. The reader will be riveted by thoroughly researched historical accounts, multidimensional characters, myths, Native legends and vivid landscapes that the author painstakingly creates.
Bob-Bob, Tom's grandfather made a living through logging at Olympic National Park. He filed a mining claim in the 1930s, but was unable to work the claim when the 1937 depression hit and he got behind on his house payments. He would have lost the house except he was able to sign over the mining claim to the bank to cover missing payments. His banker was the then very young Fletcher Lynch senior. Bob-Bob died during a camping trip with Tom and he was buried on the Peninsula. When Fletcher Lynch senior died in 1980, his son, Fletcher Junior, inherited his estate, which included that mining claim.
Fletcher Junior, one of the top executives in the mining company called Buckhorn International wants to mine erbium on the Peninsula to Tom's chagrin. But their feud is deeper than land battle. Fletcher is married to Ruth, Tom's former wife. He is also the psychopath who is responsible for Tom and Ruth's late daughter, Becky's running away from home. Sarah, Tom and Ruth's estranged teenage granddaughter who almost suffered the same fate as Becky becomes instrumental in punishing Fletcher for his evil conduct. When Tom revisits the Peninsula after 45 years with his friends and granddaughter to see his grandfather's grave, little did he know that the camping trip would turn into a quest to curtail Buckhorn mining operations. But Fletcher will not go down without a fight. He devices a cunning ploy to counter Tom's mission.
The story features archeologists, Native American tribes, psychopaths, rangers, sketch artist and scientists. Before I plunged into the knowledge, I had scant knowledge about human origins and Ice Age. The author has done an exceptional job in telling illuminating tales without seemingly didactic. This nover will most definitely appeal to readers who are intrigued with character development stories and sociology; however, I would also recommend this novel to general readers with flair for well-written stories. I rate this novel 4 out of 4 stars for its spellbinding read and impeccable editing. What I liked about this novel is that the author is not grandiloquent.
