Elastic Girl, by Olivia Rana, is a book that takes place in India and is about an impoverished girl with an amazing talent. Muthu Tikaram, known as Elastic Girl, joins the circus in the hopes of becoming famous one day, just like the stars in her favorite films.

Following an accident Muthu gains some notoriety in her community and begins to think it may be her ticket to fame, however, her life is turned upside down when the government decides to dam and flood the land on which her family resides and they lose what little possessions they have in the process. They are forced to relocate and Muthu must join all the others in line for government assistance, spending her days waiting for something that never happens, assistance that never comes. While she is waiting she begins to perform her contortionist tricks for the others in line in order to try to earn some extra money. Her father returns from work one day and sees a sign recruiting for the circus; Muthu hopes it will lead her to her dream of fame and save her family from financial ruin. She agrees to leave her family and go with the circus even though she is very young.

Olivia Rana’s book was wonderful to read. Her characters captivated me and I felt as if I were there in the setting; smells and sounds felt real to me and I became very invested in the lives of Muthu, her family, and friends. From the moment I picked up the book until the last page was turned I was very interested in the story. I didn’t want it to hurry up because nothing felt slow or out of place and I was never bored.

The book takes some unexpected turns but never once does a character do things that make you question what is going on. They stay true to themselves and that is part of what makes the book so easy to get engrossed in. The storyline doesn’t leave the reader lost and back-tracking while trying to figure out what is going on. I felt as if I could step into the world Olivia Rana created with this book.

There are some difficult scenes in this book that I feel readers need to be prepared for and they revolve around the child-trafficking theme. I think it is important to get these stories out there for people to read, but I feel there may need to be some warnings for people who might be upset by what is portrayed. That being said, the scenes were well-written and not out of place in the story. They also aren’t there to be gratuitous or to shock the reader, but rather a natural progression of how things happened in Muthu’s life.

I didn’t notice any spelling or grammatical errors in Elastic Girl, which to me means the book was very well edited. I recommend this book to most people, remaining sensitive to those that might have issue with certain parts of the story. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
