Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is filled with adventure, legends, and magic. It tells the story of an abandoned thirteen-year-old Sarah and her newly found grandfather, Tom, in the Pacific Northwest. Tom’s plan to go on a backcountry trek in Washington State’s Olympic Peninsula to visit his grandfather’s grave with friends, William and Myra, are briefly put on hold when Sarah is unexpectedly left at his door. Not wanting to delay the trip, his friends suggest bringing Sarah along and Tom reluctantly agrees. The journey soon leads to quite a feat for Sarah, with legends becoming reality.

When Sarah sketches a bear she saw in the river - a bear that’s been extinct for thousands of years - Tom questions her credibility. Deep in the park, Sarah suddenly goes missing with an important artifact. As the book moves to Sarah’s point of view, telling an extraordinary story of what happened to her while she was gone, the author delves into fantasy. The story is very compelling and tells of a girl who feels lost and alone, but adapts to her surroundings and comes out stronger than ever. Though her story seems rambling, the end of the book brings it full circle and could make even the most skeptical a believer.

As someone who loves nature and adventure travel, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Strong Heart. I was a bit wary at first, not being a big fantasy genre fan, but this book left me wanting to know more. The author’s descriptions of places, people, and things immerses the reader right into the forest with the characters. The characters are all lovable and complicated in their own ways, even without much backstory. Sarah’s character especially spoke to me, seeing someone young but strong, acting brave while being scared, and her adventurous spirit made her a character of many dimensions.

The text was well-edited and made for an enjoyable read. It’s filled with myths, science, descriptions of the beautiful scenery of the region, and complex characters. My least favorite part of the book was the ending. It ended quite abruptly and left me wanting more answers, but it also left me to reflect on the story and the characters.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars due to the compelling and beautiful plot. This book is great for anyone who likes adventure, travel, and nature with a bit of folklore thrown in. Even for those not particularly keen on fantasy novels, this book is very engaging and a great read.

The characters in this book sound highly developed with a lot of depth which, on its own, would be enough for me to read a book! The addition of fantasy is only a bonus (for me anyway!). Thanks for your review and I hope to read this book in the future :)
