Fantasy/Science Fiction Genre Discussion

Welcome to our March Fantasy/Science Fiction book genre discussion!

The Fantasy genre is set in a fictional world, uses magic or other supernatural elements, and tends to be speculative (i.e. What if vampires were real?).

The Science Fiction genre can be thought of as, "a genre of speculative fiction, typically dealing with imaginative concepts such as advanced science and technology, spaceflight, time travel, and extraterrestrial life."

Right now Gravy and I are reading "Space Opera" by Catherynne M. Valente. It is Humoristic Science Fiction.

Cool! I actually just (finally finished) Come Tumbling Down a day or two ago, so I'll speaking more about that soon!

I'm also reading Children of Blood and Bone, which I'm really enjoying!

I recently read The Watchmakers Doctor and it included time travel. I gave it a 4 out of 4. I did enjoy reading it. It is a relatively short book. I would definitely recommend it.

Thank you for sharing! I believe I tried reading it once and it was hard for me to be fully invested, but it's good to know that you enjoyed the book

I just finished rereading More Than Human by Theodore Sturgeon after many years. It's the story of a group of misfits who have abilities they end up combining to form a gestalt. It's considered a classic of science fiction, and belong to that genre because it has characters with abilities such as telepathy, teleportation and telekinesis. I liked it because of its introspection about the sense of what's human. It's not an action story, so I recommend it ti people who are interested in a humanistic science fiction.

I recently finished Come Tumbling Down by Seanan McGuire and I thought it was good! It's about a group of students that come from different worlds who end up helping one character win back her land. This was young adult fantasy. It's categorized as fantasy due to the fantastical creatures, traveling to a different world, and there is a vampire involved in this story (fairly brief, but he's there).

I will say that I wasn't a fan of the ending. Though I'm not for one dragged-out fighting/action sequences in books, I felt "battle" at the end was underwhelming. Therefore, I give the book a 3 out of 4 stars.
