At the end of the book Project Kata says that he can no longer be seen as human due to what they had done to him. He knows who he really is, but questions whether Kalin Taylor still exists within him. He shows restraint and mercy which while not within Kata's training, are just as calculated as if they were.
Who do you think escaped GenTech Project Kata or Kalin Taylor or a mesh of both?

I think he never stopped being Kalin Taylor. Up until the very end, he had the same sense of humor, the same smart-ass personality, the same tenacity, but clearly he had changed as a result of his modifications (who wouldn't!!). After his escape, I hope that he made peace with the person he had become.

I think it was a mesh of both Kata and Kalin. He could never be just Kalin again due to the modifications that were done to him, and he couldn't be just Kata because he was still human! I think it was outrageous what they did to him!

Kata denounced the name "Kalin Taylor" himself by the end of the book, essentially stating that from his experiences, he became this new, stronger individual. That said however, I think "Kata" and "Kalin Taylor" are one and the same. "Kata" is just the new name he ended up accepting as his own empowered identity. He is still "Kalin Taylor" in the end, just an older, more experienced version of himself.

I think Kata comes out of the facility and Kalin Talor is lost. Situations change people irrevocably in real life as well, that is what happens to Kalin.

I think it's a mesh of both, given that Kata and "Kalin Taylor" are one and the same. However, the difference lies in the fact that modifications were made.

I think it's a mix of the two, for the same reasons everyone else said.

Kalin at the beginning of the novel could never kill a human being or let himself be electrocuted for the sake of saving Tau. I think that what happened to Kalin in that building was so awful it completely changed him and that is why I believe it was Kata who escaped.

I think that Kalin could have been Kato had he continued to slip into the routine of training, having lost hope after Dr Renfield disappeared. However, he is jolted back to reality, so it is a modified and changed Kalin who escapes. Overall, he maintains amazingly well keeping his sarcasm and grim humor as armor of his self.

I believe him to be fully Kata and the only piece of Kaylin Taylor is the aspect of citizenship for safe haven. He has little to no interest in reuniting with his family. Tau is his family now.

While the trauma of the "training" definitely brought certain aspects of Kalin's personality to the surface, I don't think it fundamentally altered who he is. Kalin never stopped feeling compassion for Tau and never felt that the torture he experienced was a natural part of his training. He just endured it to the best of his ability.

I agree with this assessment. I think this experience stripped him of everything he identified himself to be and turned him into a killer. He even had the choice to contact Amy but there’s no indication that he’s going to do that. Kalin Taylor died after Renfield was killed.

I fully believe that no matter what was done to him that he is still the person he was before he was kidnapped and experimented on. They changed him physically yes but I never saw his sense of self disappear. He was still smart and witty until the end.

I don't believe the Kalin part of Kata ever completely disappeared. It was too fundamental to his sense of self. The person who escaped was KalinKata.

I think in traumatic events personalities in a way can form. I think an outward personality had to form to protect Kalin from any more harm. So I in a way think it was Kata who escaped the facility. I think Kalin is hiding deep inside Kata until its safe to resurface again. It's actually not to uncommon to see this in trauma victims, especially children. And Kalin being 18 is still pretty young.
