I don't think that he was like a robot. He just acted the way he did because he never knew any different. It was all he knew. Even when Kalin came, he didn't change too much. He was figuring out Kalin's perspective of the world because it was so different to everything he knew.

There was a scene where Tau questioned Dennison of the reason he is to go through these training exercises. This resulted in him getting electrocuted and this intils a cause-effect survival instinct in him. So, you can see the clone had human instincts and curiosity but they were crushed by his mentors.

Tau never seemed like a robot to me. He seemed like someone who was on the autism spectrum if anything. That's how I saw it at least.

I think that rather than being a robot Tau had just been told so many times, since he was an infant, presumably, that he was nothing that he didnโ€™t even question it. It wasnโ€™t until Kata appeared on the scene that he even realized there was anything different for him.
