Was there actually a romance there? It just seemed like pure lust

Your comment made me smile, I hadn't seen, or thought of this instance in that perspective.

Some explicit content though lack decency and moral values especially when expressed with a tone of approval! That just spells what kind of a writer that author is.
That is quite true. Sometimes it is necessary for the development of the plot, and some authors need that for their plots as well

They frame the such unavoidable situations in a rightly crafted sober prose. There are few books went right with the moderate diction of sensitive details without profanity.

When discussing in the terms of literature, I don't think that it is a forbidden taboo

I think the point of the excessive sexual activity is that there was something in the environment that was magnifying their normal emotional responses. Like the day it started raining and everyone ran out into the rain totally nude in a state of euphoria to take a shower.

I have Parkinson’s Disease and one of my medications is Miramax. A side effect of that drug is that it magnifies anything you are compulsive about – sexual addiction, gambling, drinking. People on this medication have gambled away everything they own. It is rare – but it happens. Fortunately, my compulsion is cleaning my house. I literally cannot stop thinking about cleaning my house. But I have enough self-discipline I could control it – it doesn’t control me. I think that should be the minimum expectation of a group of scientists on a mission – they should be focused 100% on the mission. I would have been so scared of the saber tooth lions, the last thing I would be thinking of is sex!
That is a very valuable opinion. Everyone should have self-discipline and the educated ones should have it more

I think that it is necessary as long as it is not exaggerated and the author wants to break the monotony of talking about science throughout the plot.

I have not read the book, but it is interesting to read the replies. Sometimes in a book, these scenes seem unnecessary. But I respect the opinions on how it fit into this book. I appreciate it as well.

Although, yes, sex is in human nature.... I do believe that Grant's sexual encounters were a bit too much. The author could have left out quite a few details.

Sci-fi with too much science can be annoying for some readers. Breaking the monotony is a good thing

I think that the author did depict real human nature. Sex is something that's natural. Sometimes sexual urges can occur even at the worst time. However I felt like the scenes in this book took the readers attention away from the storyline. They were a bit bizarre to be honest.

As much as I will agree that the sex scene is totally uncalled for in the storyline, I think the author is trying to bring the natural human instinct and desire to make it realistic to the readers.

Any distracting content in a plot can be considered as unnecessary
