I got hooked from the beginning of the book, especially the author's description of St. Petersburg. However, as the book went on, it began to feel unrealistic. There were also some science parts I felt were contradicting (how can a plant slow down aging and accelerate pregnancy?). Overall, it made a good read considering that it's a fantasy book.

The sluggish buildup I only noticed in the first chapter on the book, but it wasn't that bad for me because I'm a lover of adventure books so I waited till the very end.
