It´s the goody to shoes character. But he has memory problems and is too gullible and naive, sometimes he gets maddening.
You read and you see the asshole fall into too obvious situations from the reader's perspective that makes you want to flip the book to the other end of the room.
To top it off it's a piece of turnip. As hell they have made it so sloppy. For all that is good and fair, he is the protagonist and sometimes you wonder why the hell he's still alive.
Breaking the neck a couple of times, or being bitten by a very poisonous bug that leaves sequelae is the least that would have happened to a normal person.

I think Grant is a 'good' protagonist. He has his strengths and weaknesses, which we as humans also have. It makes the reader identify with him since he isn't 'superhuman'.

The mistakes he made as the story progresses shows that no one is perfect with or without external interference.
Very rightly put. I think it is more important to have flawed characters instead of pursuing perfection, so that readers can relate to and empathize with their errors and emotions.

I think Grant is, in general, a "good" protagonist. His strengths and weaknesses keep the story moving. It sometimes seems, though, that he does (or doesn't do) things just to make the plot move along, not necessarily because they are natural to his character.

I think Grant was a good protagonist for this story. He is very human, very relatable. We see his character developed very well, despite it not being what people may want or what they call "good". From the beginning, I think we were shown that he was a flawed character, albeit very discreetly. When first visiting his uncle's apartment, we are told, in quick passing, that he hadn't seen him or visited his uncle for several years. We are instantly given a look into his character. A man who means well, but life gets in the way. And I think that shows throughout the book. I enjoyed this book and Grant's character.

I think Grant is a good protaganist. Most protagonists have flaws. I also think that a protagonist without flaws, wouldn't do justice to the plot. However, when a protagonist is extremely flawed, I find it daunting.

I think Grant's character fits very well with the story. The flaws and strengths made him more human and relatable to the reader.

Well, It's not a must all protagonists should be a hero in all aspects. I mean unless he's an alien. Grant is a human so he's welcome to have some flaws. Though there was some choices he made which I wouldnt if I was in his place

I believe that Grant's character flaws are pretty important for the plot development. In my opinion, the protagonist of the story does not necessarily have to be a morally perfect person to be the main character in a book.

Grant as a character seems a bit two-dimensional to me considering that his only redeeming qualities seem to be his love for his estranged uncle and his bond to animals. I felt like, as a seemingly adventurous character, he lacked restraint.

When a protagonist is too perfect and flawless, it leaves me feeling that they are unrelatable and untouchable to danger. This makes me feel uninvolved with the conflicts in the story because I feel not conflict or tension. I agree with you that his character flaws are an important aspect of the plot.

I think although a good character has their flaws, this one might be a bit too flawed. It’s hard to be believable when so much is forgotten or overlooked.

Ferdinand_otieno wrote: 01 Jul 2020, 03:31 Grant is a likable character at the beginning of the book when he is dedicated to finding his uncle. He shows bravery and dedication while also exercising caution in trusting those in the expedition. He however finds himself in a sexual relationship with Irina despite his distrust, and she was only one of many unwise interactions with women. Despite his unique and exciting bond to wolves, I found him a subpar protagonist.
What is your opinion of Grant as a protagonist and why?
While I'm not sure there are any such things as good or bad protagonists, I Grant didn't do bad as a protagonist. He had his own flaws, just as every person (protagonist or antagonist).
Live and let live, baby.

I think that he is a good protagonist. In fact, Grant was exceptional in some of his attempts though like any human being, he had weaknesses as well.
