I had finished reading the book and my assumption held true that Uncle Randel was alive all these while. I never believed he was dead as fictional stories like this that always have the missing character alive in the end. So while the suspense was high and sustained through out the novel, I was waiting for the unravelling of mystery confirming that Randel was alive.

I do feel that he is very much alive but it seemed that his uncle had gone deeper into Zona in a way that no one expected, so yeah, I do believe that he is very much alive.

In novels like this, when people seem like they're gone forever, they often turn out to be alive later on! It might sound like I'm giving away a secret, but that's just how the story goes sometimes!
