The guild, a fictional novel by Stuart Bezant tells the tale of Dave a young boy who’s life is twisted upside down when he is introduced to the world’s ancient arts of magic. The story begins by introducing us to the protagonist, an unlikely fellow whom is characterized by his often negative yet educated thinking. He is a model student excelling at a scholarly level, but shown to be a recluse with no friends. On a normal day, something unexpected happens to Dave, he is told about his grandfather, a mysterious figure of which both Dave as well as the readers know hardly anything about, and is told that he will soon be receiving a call from him, instructing him to do a certain task. Dave is told to meet him at an old abbey just outside of town, where his test is soon to begin.

The book’s content, seems to be cut short at the beginning, however the ideas are good. At several points, it seemed as if the author had rushed to finish what was happening in order to proceed. The one moment that I found probably the most suspenseful, which ended up being the most disappointing with such a quick climax, was most likely on page 10 when Dave is first told about magic, being the scholarly fellow that we are lead to believe he is, I find that he would spend more than a few seconds to believe it (this is something I’d love to have changed, however I am not sure if it is actually possible since I am not providing you with much to add). Another point to address, In the beginning of the book you introduce Dave’s brother, and actually give him a personality, one which I actually like, he seems to be an antagonist like character the likes of whom I hope to see in the future of this book.

Other than these two points, the story really gets good after a while, and in fact I look forward to reading the rest of the book; The pace eventually begins to slow which is good, since at first it felt like you were rushing to get to the meat of the story. You begin (technically end) by introducing us to the three partner characters, whom seem to be quite fun and all different. I look forward to future happenings involving them, and perhaps the discovery of an enemy, or villain (but that is almost evident). I am going to warn you however, try not to adopt to many overused trends surrounding magic that we use in most books today, I find that if you experiment and try to give the magic a new original twist; perhaps it could give the story a new depth, but don’t try too hard, it could end up actually being detrimental.

This book, is obviously not finished, and is in fact at the very start of its creation, I am hoping that this story will be a smashing success, as I have said probably a million times before, try to lengthen your story, try to give as much detail about what is happening, without making too lengthy. Magic is a genre often used, and can be very successful, but it is one of those genres where I find more enjoyment with the character discovering new things about this magic, but all the while we are still able to understand what is happening, and how it works, and why it works.

In the end, I enjoyed this read quite a lot, it was a good way to spend an hour messing around. The characters for the most part were memorable, and the plot is off to a good start. With such a well done base I am expecting an amazing story and conclusion; I look forward to the final draft of the book and plan on reading it fully.

I give this book a 3 out of 4 stars.
