[Following is the official OnlineBookClub.org review of "The Third Eye Initiative" by J.J. Newman.]

This story begins in The City. It is a dystopian place where many people are oppressed by the gloom and hopelessness of their lives in poverty. Many individuals are forced to pickpocket, or "cut purses", to make it from day to day, and it is here that we are introduced to our protagonist, Tsaeris. As he travels to different places, readers learn about the various races that exist in his world. From the dwarves to the elves and other specific races, there are many surprises to be found as to Tsaeris's origin and the people he has come to know as his companions.

Recurring themes in the book are based upon secrecy and betrayal. Throughout the book, the author emphasizes the importance of keeping the main purpose of the The Third Eye Initiative hidden. There are certain levels and each one is kept out of the loop of the others' operations. After each of Tsaeris's progressions, he is faced with a betrayal that complicates his information and views on the organization.

This is definitely a memorable story! It is met with such an original plot and unique setting from its author that it is not easily forgotten. Each chapter introduces a new obstacle and challenge for our main character which seems to only draw readers in further. Some elements in the story are confusing and could be clarified more, such as the exerpts, but in no way does it take away from what the author is trying to portray.

I gave this book 3 out of 4 stars because although it possessed a refreshing originality, it lacked closure to some ideas in the work. There is always room for improvement. It took awhile for me to get my bearings in the book, and understand how the setting was relative to the overall plot. Also, at times some of the characters did not seem to be relevant to the story and took away from some of the action.

Overall, the book was interesting to read and allowed some insight into poverty and what people must do in order to survive. They were often faced with deception and deceit from those close to them, sometimes even for a few coins. The story had some redeeming qualities, but it could be improved in some areas. I would say that it is definitely a story that will keep you intrigued until the very end.
