Offical Review: Naming the Bane by Kal S. D

[Following is the official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Naming the Bane (Nihilian Effect Lore: Book Two)" by Kal S. Davian.]

This book is about a cursed human named Daggis, who eats raw meat as does his daughter Samana. His wife eats vegetables. The family travels in a caravan with other cursed humans, which are forms of animals. When the caravan is overrun with the goddess’s army and taken, it is up to Daggis to rescue them.

I liked that the author took the time to make sure his book was grammatically correct with no errors. The author writes in a concise manner, however, this is a second book in a series and although the author claims it can be a stand-alone book, it is not. I was confused from beginning to end with what was going on and all the various animal-like humans. I was confused about what the war was about, who started it, and why the humans were cursed and by whom.

The story mentions diversity of races, but does not give any other indications about this diversity, except to describe the various animal-like people, such as one character has wolf-like ears, and a tail and fur coated hands, a ‘kanian’. Another is a ‘vulpar’, with typical orange foxlike tail. I couldn’t figure out why all the different animals; if they were cursed to be that way or why the different animal types.

The story does not give me enough information to enjoy the book. I was confused about the age of the reader the author was targeting. The characters were child-like, but the book was written in an adult fashion.

I gave the book 2 out of 4 stars because while the writing grammatically was perfect, the story was too confusing for me and it was hard for me to get into the book and enjoy it because I was confused from beginning to end. I would have liked the book much better, I think, if I had read the first one.
