A Song of Ice and Fire:A Dance with Dragons by George Martin

Post by MarathonCF »

I'm just starting the first part of Dance with Dragons and I wondered what people thought of the series. I find them very hit and miss. I absolutely loved the first two, didn't really like first part of a Storm of Swords but loved the second part and then found A Feast for crows quite difficult to read. Wondering what Dance with Dragons is going to be like?

To MarathonCF: I've read all the books in A Song of Ice and Fire. Fell in love with the first, second and third books in the series. The fourth book A Feast for Crows was a little hard to read. The author added new characters in the chapters like the Kracken's Daughter or different titles that referred to the same character. A Dance with Dragons is told in the same way. In my opinion the book was OK. I got to find what happened to the key characters like Dany and Tyrion which made me continue to read the book. I can't wait for the sixth book to come out I heard that George R.R. Martin is going back to his original style of writing that was shown in the first three books.

I have thought about reading this series, but I don't know enough about the books to have much interest yet. Are these books a highly recommended read?

I read the entire series but felt that the last books were not nearly as good as the first couple of books.

I read this entire series and enjoyed it very much. The story line is varied and the story takes you to another world where all things seem possible. I will reread again and again and feel fortunate to revisit with old friends. Martin is a great storyteller.

I'm half way through the first one and so far really enjoying it. I would definitely recommend the books as long as you are comfortable with a lot of characters!

I am enjoying this one - anyone else alarmed at how the TV show is changing what happened in the books suddenly?

Hey Marathon,
Let me start by saying that A Song of Ice and Fire is absolutely one, if not my absolute favorite, book series ever. Why? Because I love not just the medieval setting, but the realism of family feuds, the histories and bloodlines of kings, and the truth about each Pov character's back story. Brienne is a true heroine for example, though to an ignorant outsider she is a tall and possibly unsightly girl, but to us especially, most of us anyway, she lacks fear and puts others ahead of herself. But she is also a conflicted woman, both about her love for Renly and Jaime, and how she feels about herself based upon outsiders from over the years. And what about Tyrion, Jaime, Asha, Jon, Eddard, or any of he other Pov characters that people really have feelings for? I would certainly say that there is to be good found in all of them, even Jaime who was labeled nothing but a kingslayer throughout the two first novels. A Song of Ice and Fire shows people the truth about family loyalties, the fake and true bonds between friends, and all in all, the fantasy mixed with real world realism is staggering and makes a wonderful story.
But as for Dance and Feast, I liked them both too. And I think that Feast is underrated, probably because we see Sam, the Lannisters, and the Greyjoys, and people have mixed feelings about Sam and those two families, so most probably thought that Feast might have been boring. But I certainly liked it and I felt it valuable and good to see Victarion's and Jaime's perspective, and to know that they have hearts. I would say look forward to Dance for sure, and if you like the novels, make sure to check out Dunk and Egg. Its stories that center around the childhood of Aegon V, Dany's great grandfather, before he became king of course.

During my first reading of the series, I barely made it through AFFC. The whole time I kept thinking, "We'll, the next chapter has to be Tyrion... Right!???" :?

After finishing ADWD, I eventually started retreading all 5 books. I found AFFC far more enjoyable on the second reading. Give it a try.

On the first reading, it was pretty tough getting through AFFC. After rereading the entire serious a second time through, I really enjoyed it. The benefit of reading it a second time, is that you lose the urge of needing to know what happens to some of the more "popular" characters. You can sit back and see how the minor characters fit into what is taking place in "the world" of A Song of Ice and Fire. If you are going to read the series, do a yourself a favor and invest in all aspects of the world the characters inhabit. It's a real treat when you understand the history, religion and cultural significances of each character.

I'm currently reading through book one and enjoying it, but will take the advice to pay attention to everything more than focusing on 'getting to specific characters', as I've already felt myself doing somewhat. I have no doubt it's a series I'll read again and take notes on just to keep it all straight!
