Dead Energy, an Alex Cave Adventure is the first in which I assume is a series of adventure/mystery stories by James Corkill.

It introduces the hero of the story Alex Cave. He is a university teacher in the town of Montana USA. He also is ex CIA and works with the Director of National Security so has plenty of influential friends when he begins to assist the coast guard in solving a small problem of stolen crude oil!

The story begins with Alex on vacation when he hears a Mayday call from a nearby oil tanker, first on scene he finds the tanker deserted not only of crew but of thousands of gallons of crude oil. Initial thoughts are of a major oil leak but none is found and the mystery further deepens when six of the seven man crew are found dead over 100 miles away on top of a mountain. Things go from bad to worse as more tankers are attacked and crews killed. The few witnesses all claim to see a bright light and a rainbow effect surrounding the tankers as the Mayday calls go out.

As the lack of fuel begins to take effect people begin looting and killing in a vain attempt to stay alive. Alex teams up with Bull and Christa who work for All Alaska Oil Company in an attempt to uncover where and why all the oil is going. The only clue the trio has is a strange crystal that was found in the hold of one of the oil tankers. Under closer inspection it seems the crystal is alive!

Meanwhile all across the USA people are trying to survive, which now has become the one rule. AOS are the Army of Survivalists which initially recruits people who wish to learn the skill of survival. Now that that skill is becoming a fact of life the army is now keeping people against their wills and training them to become soldiers. Everex the leader is a man on a mission. He rules without compassion and kills without Mercy. As one would expect Everex and Alex’s paths cross with dire consequences for one of them.

It has been quite difficult to do this book review, not because I didn’t enjoy the book, I did. However it has many different characters, all which were extremely well described, and many different parts of the basic story which all come together in the conclusion. But most importantly it has been hard to write this review and give the book the justice it deserves without giving away any spoilers. The ending was not what I was expecting so with the added twist I will give the book 3 out of 4 stars. I would like to give 4 out of 4 but I’m not a fan of this genre of book but am sure it will appeal to a great many people who are. Definitely a great series in the making.

Thank you so much for the great review. The second adventure just needs a final editing.
