Review of Knight of Darkness by Kinley MacGragor

Post by K-katastrophe3 »

Varian is an assassin for Merlin, birthed from darkness, but fighting for the light. His mother, the right hand of the Queen of Darkness, is determined to get him to fight on their side, and will do anything to get it to happen. Pretense of love, torture, even blackmail. He fights the darkness in him by fighting for the innocent. Merewyn is an innocent woman in need of help, or is she? Turns out Merewyn has been a slave to Varian's mother for centuries, cursed to look like a hag that no man could tolerate the sight of, all because she made a bargain to not be so beautiful so that one man could see her for who she is and not what she looks like. When even her father turned her out, she was taken in by the one who cursed her and enslaved. Determined to be free of the curse, Merewyn will do anything to get free, even turn someone over to her captor to be tortured, even against her own instincts. This is how they meet. Varian being tortured by his cruel mother, and Merewyn fighting for her freedom. They get free and flee to a land where they will be trapped for all eternity, full of traps and surprises. Flaming trees, agressive rocks, pits of despair, and various other surprises on their adventure to find their freedom.

The characters in this story were very interesting. Especially once you get to know their backgrounds. This novel was fun and entertaining, though at times i felt like I could predict what would happen next. Not always a bad thing, especially since there was not too much of it. There were a few funny surprises that I thought fit well with the story in making it flow and keeping it interesting. Varian and Merewyn were a strong couple that, through their struggles, found out who they really were and what they valued in life.

This book is the second one in the series Lords of Avalon. Not quite as good as the first, but still a good read I think. Don't let my opinion stop you from reading and discovering their adventures for yourself! It was definitely full of adventure, laughter, and surprises.
